Traditional plant remedies are practiced in many parts of the world. India has a rich floral diversity. A survey was carried out in Kapurthala district, Punjab (India) on 100 local residents to investigate the use of traditional plant formulations/drugs for common ailments. The study revealed that various medicinal plants are helpful in number of diseases. People have learned about these practices from their respective elders. Around 60 plant species are being used by the farmers, vaids, hakims, employees and other common people to cure nearly 30 human ailments. These species fall into 31 families. Plants from families like Apiaceae, Labiatae and Solanaceae are used preferentially. A chunk of astounding revelation was that the knowledge is not being bestowed. This has happened because of the availability of other medical facilities to their close vicinity. Based upon the present documentation, it can be assumed that a significant number of the people of this area are still practicing traditional plant remedies for the treatment of different health obstructions. They use to collect most of the material required for various treatments from the field Others grow some of these plant species in their kitchen garden. Traditional medicines are affordable, but are not easily available. It has also been observed that number of traditional healers have reduced. This may be the reason of declining trends of these practices.
