Experimental results on collisional-pumped x-ray lasers obtained at the Institute of Laser Engineering are reviewed. Amplification has been observed over a broad wavelength region from 14 nm to 4.4 nm with Ni-like ions of various atomic elements. Atomic number scaling of the Ni-like ion x-ray laser; especially with regard to the short wavelength extension and efficiency improvement; is discussed. Atomic physics studied with high resolution spectroscopy of the x-fag lasers are described.
