摘要

The melon (Cucumis melo L.) belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family, shows a large morphological variation and it is one of the most important species from the economic point of view. Besides being a rich source of nutrients such as carbohydrates, organic acids, minerals and vitamins, it can be grown throughout the year. It grows in tropical and subtropical regions, giving a wide margin to producing countries to maintain an adequate supply all the year. However, melon producers have to deal with yield reductions due to the attack of insects, bacterias, virus and fungi. Biotechnological strategies such as genetic transformation can improve the tolerance of this crop to biotic stresses by the insertion of genes that help in the struggle against these problems. Efforts have been carried out to create transgenic plants from different melon cultivars using somatic embryos, seeds, cotyledons, polinic tube, leaf and buds or cotyledonary leaves in early stages of development using Agrobacterium tumefaciens, A. rhizogenes, particle bombardment and direct inoculation, with the goal to improve the postharvest quality, develop tolerance to abiotic stresses like salinity and dehydration, and resistance to biotic stresses such as viruses and phytopathogens. As a result, several transgenic plants have been created showing different desirable phenotypic characteristics. In this paper the available information about genetic improvement of melon is reviewed and analyzed, focusing on the different strategies of genetic manipulation that had been utilized with the aim to introduce agronomic important traits.
