This essay, originally presented at the "World Literature Today and China International Conference" (2007; Beijing), examines the "monumental" books governing literary studies in America during the last thirty years in order to compare the enormous economic and cultural changes in America and Europe during the "cultural modernism" of the early twentieth century to those in China in the late twentieth century.
