Analysis on the Propagation Characteristics of Partial Discharge in XLPE Cable Joints

To improve the detection and location accuracy of partial discharge (PD) in XLPE power cable systems, it is necessary to analyze the propagation characteristics of PD in XLPE cable joints. In this paper, 10 kV XLPE cable joint model was established based on Finite Integration Technique (FIT), taking into account the frequency-dependent properties of semi-conductive layer. The simulation results demonstrated the feasibility of FIT to analysis the propagation characteristics of PD in cable joints. The attenuation and distortion of PD when propagate in cable joints are relatively more serious than in cable with the same length and the energy attenuation is mainly concentrated near the connector. The average velocity of electromagnetic wave propagate in the joint is substantially the same.
