摘要

Poly(ether sulfone) belongs to the family of high temperature thermoplastics with excellent thermal stability and mechanical strength. Application of microwave-irradiation as the heat source for the condensation polymerization for the efficient synthesis of poly(ether sulfone) is demonstrated. A modified microwave reaction system incorporating overhead agitator and condenser was used to conduct the synthesis of poly(ether sulfone). Microwave-irradiation resulted in 85% reduction in polymerization time for the comparative product profile. Chain structure of the synthesized polymers was established using NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. DSC analysis was performed to establish the glass transition temperature of the polymer, and molecular weight measurements were performed to ascertain the molecular weight characteristics and distribution. Polymer film surface characteristics and composition were studied using SEM and EDX.
