Day hospital treatment of bipolar disorder

Even though patients suffering from bipolar disorder are treated in day hospitals, recommendations for day hospital treatment of these patients has not been precisely described yet. Obvious differences related to the psychopathological picture and the course of illness can be noticed in that group. The following three case reports show the different necessities and difficulties of treatment offered to this group. Moreover suggestions for an adequate day hospital treatment of bipolar disorder are provided. As yet characteristic traits which influence day hospital treatment of bipolar disorder have not been identified, an unique merely disorder-related specific therapeutic concept seems not to be indicated. Therefore day hospitals need to adjust its outpatient treatment individually in order to meet the requirements of patients with bipolar disorder.
