摘要

The joint award of the Nobel prize in physics to William Henry Bragg and his son William Lawrence Bragg (WLB) is the only example of a Nobel prize being awarded jointly to a father and son, and WLB remains the youngest recipient of a Nobel prize. Although 2014 is officially to be regarded as the year of crystallography, 2013 is actually the centenary of the full publication of the crucial experiments carried out by the Braggs, following discussions between them that took place the previous summer. After a happy and productive period in sunny Adelaide, the move of the Bragg family to grimy Leeds in 1909 had initially been dispiriting, but all was to change after that summer holiday, the location of which was marked in July 2013 by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque on the house where they had been staying.
