摘要

Considering the energy scarcity in Pakistan an attempt was made to exploit the energy from waste agricultural biomass (WAB). This study was carried out in order to assess the prevailing management practices of WAB, its quantification and energy potential. In this regard district Sanghar was selected as the study area. In present study prevailing WAB management, crops yield, yield to residue ratio, availability factor, availability period, total and available quantity and energy potential were determined. Total quantity of WAB generated was 2,533 kt/y. It was estimated that about 43 % of total WAB generated was utilized as animal feed and for cooking; about 14 % was sold as fodder, fuel or fiber, whereas remaining 43 % was burnt-out without any use. The available quantity of WAB was 1,442 kt/y. For determining the energy potential, WAB samples were collected and after processing analyzed for calorific values. The energy potential of available quantity of WAB was 21,464 TJ/y, which can generate electricity of 1,192 GWh/y by installing power plant of 150 MW. Utilization of WAB would contribute in reduction of energy scarcity and pollution.
