Hip and groin pain in athlete is a common condition and is not infrequently a cause of frustration and aggravation to both physician and patient. It may result from an acute injury, a chronic repetitive trauma and also from systemic pathologies. The differential diagnosis of hip pain is broad and includes bone injuries, intra- and extra-articular pathologies, neuropathies and also visceral diseases; their clinical differentiation and subsequent management is difficult. With the current advancements in hip imaging and arthroscopy there is a significant more attention focused on athletes affected by groin pain as consequence of intra-articular lesions. This article briefly reviews the different common hip intra-articular conditions that causes groin pain in this specific population, focusing on their diagnosis, imaging and treatment.
