A novel path in partitioning: Water-soluble BTP ligands for the innovative SANEX process

Separation of long-lived radionuclides from spent nuclear fuel, with subsequent conversion into shorter lived or stable nuclides by fast neutron induced fission reaction, is a promising concept to reduce the long term radiotoxicity of high level nuclear waste. This concept is designated as partitioning and transmutation strategy.
Since the separation of the different actinides cannot be realized in one step, a multistage process with several liquid-liquid extraction steps is necessary. In order to facilitate an efficient process, highly effective extracting agents are required.
Aq-BTP, a new masking agent for separating trivalent minor actinides (Ann(III),Cm (III)) from lanthanides is presented. It displays very high separation factors of SFEu(III)/Am(III) approximate to 1000. Using time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) 3 Cm(III) complex species [Cm(H(2)O)9 3n(aq-BTP)n] (n = 1,2,3) were identified in H(2)O and 0.5 M HNO(3). Stability constants of logK(01) = 5.9, logK(02) = 9.6 and logK(03) = 13.1 in H(2)O and logK(01) = 3.1, logK(02) = 6.7, logK(03) = 11.0 in 0.5 M HNO(3) were determined.
