Background and aims: There are many risk factors for the incidence of osteoporosis. The connection between anthropometric factors and bone mineral density (BMD) still remains unclear considering the numerous contradictory results in the studies published. The purpose of the study is to test the relation between anthropometric factors and BMD in a randomly chosen group of postmenopausal women.
Methods: The study included 72 women aged between 52 and 93 years old. Regarding the densitometric "T" value of spine and hip BMD, they were divided into two groups: 24 without criteria for osteoporosis, 48 with osteoporosis. We measured weight (BW), thoracic kyphosis (ThK) and lumbar lordosis angles (LuL), body mass index (BMI), Lorenz constitution index (LCI), muscle index (MI), and bony structure weight (BSW).
Results: The correlation between age and BMD was statistically insignificant. The correlation of BW and BMI to BMD was unclear. The comparison of groups was insignificant and correlation tests showed statistically important correlation with hip BMD but not with spine BMD. LCI showed a predominant effect of fat on bodyweight in most women and did not demonstrate any statistically significant differences among the observed groups. The comparison of OLI among groups did not show any statistically significant differences. Linear correlation test showed a statistically important negative relation with BMD value (spine r=-0.28; hip r=-0.55). Statistically significant dependence of hip BMD on OLI was confirmed by the linear regression test, which was insignificant in the case of spine BMD. A comparison of average MI values showed statistically significant increased value in the osteoporosis group. There were no differences among groups in average BSW values and spine and hip BMD values. The group of women without osteoporosis had a slightly increased value of ThK and LuL angle but the difference was statistically insignificant.
Conclusion: The study mostly showed insignificant differences in the observed anthropometric parameters among groups of postmenopausal women with and without osteoporosis. The indicated differences in OLI, MI, and BSW offer the possibility of further research with different approaches to defining the constitution type, muscle development, and bone dimensions.
