摘要

Context analysis of the human mitochondrial DNA control region revealed seven pairs of DNA stretches, each 10-26 bp long, complementary in the parallel direction of strands, i.e., direct f-repeats, or parallel repeats. The position of these elements relative to the functional elements of the mtDNA control region was analyzed. It was demonstrated that the light mtDNA strand transcription initiation site in the control region is represented not only by direct repeats, but includes inverted and parallel repeats as well. The origin of parallel complementary regions in. genomes is discussed.
