摘要

The effect of arc-heater configuration and input operational conditions on arc-heater performance are investigated to design a low-electric-power, segmented arc heater based on numerical simulations. The computer code ARCFLO4 is used to solve the segmented arc heater flows in this numerical study. First, changes in performance due to changes in constrictor length, constrictor diameter, and nozzle-throat diameter are investigated. Then, changes in performance caused by input current and mass flow rate are investigated for a specific arc-heater configuration. It is confirmed that the change in mass-averaged enthalpy is related more strongly to the constrictor diameter than the constrictor length, that the pressure is not significantly affected by the configuration of the constrictor, and that the stability of the arc discharge improved as the arc column became thicker. It is shown that the nozzle-throat diameter strongly affects only the pressure. Also, it is shown that the electric input power increases, but the mass-averaged enthalpy decreases as the mass flow rate increases. In addition, a scaling study is performed to characterize the performance of low-power, segmented arc heaters.
