Air flow field study in a new-type umbrella plate scrubber with CFD and PIV

A new-type umbrella plate scrubber was developed in terms of the dust, dioxide sulfur, and deleterious gaseous pollution, which were effluent from coal-burning boilers. The airflow field was studied by CFD simulation and PIV experimental methods. Initial work included not only airflow continuous phase CFD simulation using turbulent models RSM and SIMPLE algorithm, but also the pressure drop simulation with the range of the inlet-velocity uin=10.6-15.5 m/s. Furthermore, the pressure drop was measured by digital manometer with uin=10.8-17.3 m/s. At the uin=12m/s, the airflow field was measured by PIV and compared with the CFD simulation results near the umbrella plates. The results show that the pressure drop increases with the inlet-velocity increase and the simulated pressure drop is 220-480 Pa, while the measured pressure drop is 204-680 Pa. The airflow field of the CFD simulation and PIV measurement indicate that the turbulent flow is intense and small vortexes exist round the umbrella plates, which is of benefit to separation and purification because the contact surface area is increased and the retention time is lengthened.
