beta,beta-Dimethylacrylalkannin (1), a naphthazarin compound isolated from the root of Arnebia euchroma, reacts with 2-mercaptoethanol, ethanethiol and glutathione to afford products 2 similar to 8. It is concluded that nucleophiles add to the side chain (1'-C) via a reductive alkylation and to the quinone ring via an oxidative Michael addition.
