The addition of a small amount of water induced a dramatic accelerating effect on allylsilylation catalyzed by H+ exchanged montmorillonite, enhancing the catalytic activity by greater than 60-fold. The allylsilylation of aromatic and aliphatic alkenes was completed within 15-60 min at 40 degrees C. It is possible that the active disilyl cation intermediate is stabilized by water molecules on the montmorillonite surface.
