摘要

To study the drag reduction effect of step on planning trimaran hull, numerical simulations were carried out for the fluid fields around stepped and non-stepped planning trimaran models at volume based Froude numbers from 3.14 to 5.83. The numerical results were validated by comparing with experimental data. The calculated results show that, after ventilation, air in the tunnel is drawn into the mainhull bottom and creates air cavity behind step. Step can reduce the wetted area, improve planning efficiency of the mainhull and thus effectively decrease resistance at calculated speeds. As the speed is increased, the influence of step becomes more significant;at the highest speed, the wetted area of mainhull drops by 49.1%, the mainhull lift increases by 16.1%, and the total resistance gets a reduction of 17%. The wave in tunnel region is weakened due to the presence of steps, and hence the wetted area of tunnel is decreased.
