摘要

We present two types of optical switches based on photonic crystal microcavities in which the on/off ratio and the required frequency shift are optimized due to Fano resonance effect. We demonstrate that by proper coupling between adjacent microcavities, one can design a high contrast optical switch, suitable for current optical telecommunications applications. Results from numerical simulations show that utilizing the proper configuration of coupled-microcavities has led to the design of optical switch with a low required frequency shift of 2 nm as well as high on/off ratio of 36 dB. Moreover, we demonstrate that there is a trade-off between the switching contrast and the required frequency shift.
