Modeling as a backup tool for the history of science and technology

In the modern era, scientific and technological progress has been a key engine driving the development of society and a major factor underpinning its character. The history of science and technology is therefore an important area of historical studies, and a proper understanding of humanity's past and present, as well as the possibility to glance into its future, largely depends on its results. This paper presented at a meeting of the RAS Presidium is dedicated to new achievements in this area of knowledge, namely, the development of the methodology applied by historians of science and technology.
