The present study confirms the establishment of the invasive exotic species Corbicula flummea (Muller; 1774) in the Segura River Basin, widening the geographical distribution of the species in the Iberian Peninsula. We show its distribution and information about the expansive dynamic through the main channel of Segura River and through the man-made channels for the agricultural purpose. The population structure of the species probably reflected effects offlow regulation. We propose two possible hypotheses concerning the invasion of this exotic species: (1) introduction into the basin through the Tajo-Segura interbasin water transfer system, and (2) the involuntary or negligent actions related to the transit of material and boats, and the introduction offish for sport fishing as pathways for the clam colonization.
