The power generation of a solar photovoltaic system is determined by weather conditions while the power consumption of an air-conditioner is significantly affected by the indoor temperature which is relatively controllable. In the meantime, there is a thermal comfort zone for the indoor temperature and thus it is theoretically feasible to improve the energy performance of photovoltaic air-conditioners (PVAC) by appropriate indoor temperature control. The paper proposes a novel control method which can improve the energy matching ability of PVAC while maintaining the indoor thermal comfort. The power difference between the air-conditioner load and the photovoltaic power is added as the input of the control algorithm of the thermostat. As a result, the air-conditioner is able to achieve load follow with the photovoltaic system and, at the same time, regulate the indoor temperature. A PVAC system in Shanghai is simulated by TRNSYS to verify the feasibility of the control method. It is found that the solar fraction of PVAC in summer are raised by 5% when applying the proposed control method. In addition, the proposed method exhibits better control accuracy of indoor temperature in summer.
