摘要

An M(s)6. 5 earthquake struck the Ludian county, Yunnan province, on Aug. 3, 2014. The earthquake killed over 600 people, and resulted in the unexpected loss. We obtained the knowledge of the complexities of the source structure and energy radiation from analysis of the azimuth-dependent apparent source time functions (ASTFs), which are retrieved from the Love waves recorded by the broadband stations of the National Seismograph Network of China using the empirical Green's function technique, and had a discussion on the relation between the complexities and the loss. The analysis of the ASTFs shows, that the temporal process of energy release was simple and short, with the 83% being released within the first 10 s, that but two intersected faults were involved into the earthquake, which orient in directions of about 60 degrees and 150 degrees, respectively, that the rupture started on the 60 degrees-oriented fault in bilateral manner, and later dominantly propagated to 60 degrees direction and trigged the other fault, and that the rupture on the second fault also started in bilateral manner, but later dominantly propagated to 150 degrees direction. Because of the involvement of the two faults, the energy radiation in near field had a complicated pattern. The stronger radiation covered azimuths of 60 degrees similar to 210 degrees. Thus, the unexpected loss should be attributed to the simple and short temporal process but the intersected source structure and azimuth-dependent energy radiation.
