摘要

A very bad cough in children makes families anxious and is a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for doctors. A rigorous clinical approach is essential to avoid overlooking an organic cause that requires specific treatment. Somatoform disorders are an etiological group which is difficult to diagnose and treat. Difficult-to-treat asthma is also a complex situation where persistent cough requires confirmation of the validity of the diagnosis of asthma and a search for associated conditions, including hyperventilation syndrome and vocal cord dysfunction. In most cases, no red flag is present but the recurrence of the symptom can become unbearable for the family. Time spent listening to parents and giving them simple explanations can reduce their worries, avoid further medical consultations, and help them to better tolerate this symptom.
