The design of a compact dual band microstrip antenna operating in GSM 1800 and ISM 2450 band, suitable for mobile phone applications is presented in this article. The antenna has a very compact dimension of 24.8 x 24.8 x 0.8 mm(3), with a partial ground plane. Split ring resonators (SRRs) in effect of achieving miniaturization and impedance matching are discussed. It covers a -10dB impedance bandwidth of (1.71-1.80) GHz and (2.40-2.49) GHz. Also, the design and analysis of an epsilon-negative SRR cover, is described in vision of reducing the specific absorption rate (SAR) at 1.8 GHz. Finite element modeling based computational results showed an average SAR reduction of about 93% on a 10 g of the cubical human tissue model. Prototype of the antenna along with the cover is fabricated and tested. The return loss, radiation pattern and gain of the antenna with and without the SRR cover are also discussed.
