摘要

In this article the potential of the nuclear magnetic resonance method (NMR) to analyze the oxidative aging of elastomers is discussed. For this purpose an EPDM compound is examined. It is found that the NMR data can be interpreted very well by a biexponential approach. The NMR results are in good agreement with a model calculation on the effect of oxidative aging on the network chain density. So the NMR data provide a deep insight into the mechanisms of oxidative aging. Finally the NMR results are compared to chemiluminescence and stress relaxation data. This shows that a prediction of lifetime based on NMR data should be viewed rather critically at the present time and the other two methods are preferable for this purpose.
