A new type of standard elliptical four-pocket hybrid journal bearing is presented to adapt the space requirement of the non-circular orbit of machine tool spindle centre. The Reynolds equation and flow continuity equation have been solved using finite difference method, overrelaxation method and underrelaxation method. Dynamic performance characteristics of the new type of standard elliptical four-pocket hybrid journal bearing have been investigated, and compared with those of the other three hybrid journal bearings (two-lobe four-pocket hybrid journal bearings and two circular four-pocket hybrid journal bearings with different radial clearances). The numerically simulated results indicate that such type of standard elliptical hybrid journal bearing is able to greatly improve the stability of hybrid journal bearing, and threshold speed even can be increased to 1.5, 2.6, and 3.1 times as high as that of two-lobe four-pocket hybrid journal bearing, and of two circular four-pocket hybrid journal bearings, respectively.
