Dynamic analysis of RC high minarets with tuned mass damper

Minarets are collapsing at different locations of the world due to strong winds and earthquakes, and, thus, deaths and losses of property are occurring. In this study, the dynamic behavior of a reinforced concrete high minaret and a form of this minaret with Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) placed were investigated under the effect of wind forces obtained from the Rita Hurricane, harmonic ground motion and selected earthquake motions. Analyses depending the time definition area were made on the minaret models and according to the results obtained from analysis, the structural behaviours of minarets were compared. It was found that the damping ratio of the minaret with TMD is greater 2.4 times than that of the normal minaret. This condition resulted naturally with the smaller structural response values such as lateral displacements for minaret with TMD compared to the normal minaret. The analysis results have also shown that the TMD is very effective to decrease the amplitude of lateral displacements and dissipate the vibrations quickly of the minarets under effect of harmonic ground motion. The results have revealed that there is no general positive effect of the TMS's on the response of minarets againts earthquake motions.
