Lasing transitions of Nd3+ ions in lead antimony borate glasses

Glasses of composition 30PbO center dot 5Sb(2)O(3)center dot(45-x)B2O3 center dot xNd(2)O(3), with x=0 to 1.0 in steps of 0.2, were prepared by the melt quenching method. Various physical parameters, viz., density, molar volume and oxygen packing density were evaluated. Optical absorption and luminescence spectra of all the glasses were recorded at room temperature. From the observed absorption edges, the optical band gap and Urbach energies were calculated. Judd-Ofelt theory was applied to characterise the absorption and luminescence spectra of Nd3+ ions in these glasses. From the luminescence spectra, various radiative properties, such as transition probability, branching ratio and radiative lifetime were evaluated for different emission levels of Nd3+ ions. The radiative lifetime for the F-4(3/2)->(4)F(11/2)multiplet was also evaluated from the recorded lifetime decay curves. Quantum efficiencies were estimated for all the glasses and found to increase with the concentration of Nd2O3. From the obtained results, conclusions were made about the possibility of using these glasses as laser material.
