Morphology of the Eggs Chorion of Pachycoris klugii Burmeister and P. torridus (Scopoli), Pest of Jatropha curcas

The external structure of the chorion of Pachycoris klugii Burmeister and P. torridus (Scopoli) eggs (Hemiptera: Scutelleridae) are described and compared. The eggs were examined, photographed, and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and morphometry program tpsDig. The eggs of the two species of insects are barrel-shaped with polygonal ornamentation, and differ in their dimensions and in some forms of the polygonal structures. Some features of the chorion of the eggs of P. klugii and P. torridus can be used to identify both species. The possible phylogenetic and taxonomic implications of the results found in this work are discussed.
