ACTIVATION OF beta 1 INTEGRIN STIMULATES MICROTUBULE ACETYLATION

The effect of beta 1 integrin activation on the level of tubulin acetylation was investigated in a set of three cell lines - beta 1 integrin deficient cells (GD25), cells with fully active wild type beta 1 integrin (GD25 beta 1) and cells expressing mutant integrin with suppressed activation (W775A) that can be experimentally restored. We found that wild type and reactivated mutant beta 1 integrin confer about 1.5 fold increase in tubulin acetylation above the level, found in beta 1 integrin null cell, or cells expressing non-activated mutant integrin. This effect was specific, since integrin expression or activation did not affect tubulin tyrosination and polyglutamination. Our observations suggest a specific link between beta 1 integrin signalling and tubulin post-translational acetylation.
