A Linux based CNC system for micro electrical machining

摘要

This paper presents a new CNC system for micro electrical machining based on the Linux platform. The newly developed CNC system is fully featured with an open architecture CNC functionalities and an on-line electrode measurement capability. It utilizes the advantages of Linux such as abundant functionalities, better stability and robustness, as well as real time feature. The on-line measurement module has a resolution of 1.61 mu m and an overall magnification of 113-729 times. The experimental results of block electrodes electrical discharge grinding show that the relative measurement error is less than 5%. This feature ensures the machining precision and assists the online compensation of electrode wear. The mu-EM machine equipped with the Linux based CNC system has a good potential of manufacturing not only micro-shafts in the size of 5 mu m in diameter but also complex three-dimensional micro structures.
