Most of enhancement algorithms for fingerprint image work well in relatively good-quality fingerprints, however, they fail to perform well in poor-quality fingerprints. In order to effectively preserve the ridge structures while reducing noise, in this paper a fingerprint image enhancement algorithm in frequency domain for low-quality finger print image is proposed. We enhance the fingerprint image in frequency domain with a tuned frequency bandpass filter, which is separable in the radial and angular domains, respectively. The radial filter is an exponential bandpass filter, and the angular filter is a raised cosine filter. These processing can enhance the fingerprint image both in radial and angular domain, thus, it enhances the ridges completely. Experimental results show our proposed algorithm shows better results compared with a state-of-the-art algorithm over public databases.
