摘要

Drilling is one of the processes where lasers have been successfully applied. Laser assisted drilling process offers combined advantages of a conventional drilling process and a laser heating process. An experimental investigation of a laser assisted drilling process was conducted in this study. 41Cr4, C45E4, stainless steel and cast iron were used as workpiece materials and a fibre laser was employed with the beam formed into an ellipse shape. Results show that compared with laser pre-heating, the initial hole diameters are improved more than 122.7% for 41Cr4, 85.9% for C45E4 and 140.7% for stainless steel, and the drilling time is shortened over 18.6% for cast iron, 16.3% for C45E4 and 39.9% for stainless steel in the laser assisted drilling process, which produces less tool wear and a higher production rate.
