Limits of Continuum Aerodynamics

At very low densities or in the flow about very small objects, air cannot be modeled as a fluid continuum. In such cases, classical continuum theory does not apply. fit typical aerodynamics textbooks, the limitations of continuum theory are discussed only briefly or not at all. Here, an improved rule for approximating the limits of continuum theory is presented. The effects of Knudsen number, Reynolds number, and Mach number are considered. The criterion is based on a 1% deviation between results predicted front continuum theory and results predicted from the kinetic theory of gases.
