Large-scale separation flow control on airfoil with synthetic jet

This paper concerns the large-scale separation flow control over an airfoil using a synthetic jet (SJ). The flow is simulated by solving unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations with a SST turbulence model. Simulation results show that the frequency of separated flow fields is dominated by the one of the jet flows and SJ an efficient tool to suppress both flow separation and span-wise motion occurring in the separation region. An optimisation of control parameters (velocity amplitude, frequency, angle with respect to the wall) is performed by coupling a Genetic Algorithm (GA) with the flow analysis solver. A significant improvement of the control efficiency is obtained: the maximum lift is increased of 48% and the stall angle delayed from when compared with the uncontrolled flow over the baseline shape. Flow characteristics and the influence of the respective control parameters are presented, analysed and discussed.
