摘要

In this study, the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of three edible medicinal plants Olax acuminata, Gnetum gnemon and Rhaphidophora hongkongensis were investigated. The antioxidant activity was determined by spectrophotometric DPPH radical scavenging assay. The antimicrobial activity was tested against five bacteria and assessed by the presence or absence of zone of inhibition. RP-HPLC analysis was done to identify the phenolic compounds present in the extracts by comparison with authentic standards. Out of all the extracts, the ethanol extract of O. acuminata was found to have IC50 value of 41.34 A mu g/ml, which could be compared with the synthetic antioxidant agent gallic acid (35.69 A mu g/ml). The strongest antibacterial activity was recorded for the ethanolic extract of O. acuminata against S. aureus (24 mm). This study indicates the potential of the plants as a valuable source of bioactive compounds and could be potential alternatives for synthetic antioxidants to be applicable in both health and food.
