摘要

Canine pyoderma is one of the most common clinical presentations in small animal practice. Until recently, the treatment of bacterial skin infections caused little reason for concern and the prognosis for such infections was determined solely by the primary underlying disease. The emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria such as meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) over the past ten years has had a major impact on the treatment of skin, wound and ear infections. As staphylococci, including MRSA and MRSP, are transmitted between humans and pets in both directions, a comprehensive owner education is indicated as part of an appropriate case management. This article provides an overview of the epidemiology, characteristics and implications of MRSA and MRSP as small animal pathogens. It provides the background information for successful therapy of infections and discusses opportunities for prevention through responsible use of antimicrobials and rigorous hygiene measures.
