The topic of this paper is the mode structure of a multilayer dielectric planar waveguide, obtained in the framework of the effective resonator model. In the article, construction of the model is described, explicit expressions for modes of different types (i.e. radiation, substrate and guided modes) are presented, and their most important properties are discussed.
