This work involves analysis of new, lighter flexible materials to replace heavy, inflexible solid rubber boots now used for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) protection. A new finished-leather and rubber control were exposed to toxic industrial chemicals using a modified ASTM F-903 penetration test or splash exposure simulation. The methods identified for recovery were thermal desorption for volatile toxins and accelerated solvent extractions for toxins with higher boiling points. AATCC Test Method 81 was used to extract sulfuric acid samples. Analytical methods for the toxins included gas chromatography and automated titration. Both of the materials had an equal number of chemicals that they performed best with, but leather is more viable for boots because of the added comfort.
