摘要

Introduction: The advantages of electrophoretic displays (EPDs) include flexibility, lightness, thinness and easy readability in all lighting conditions [1]. Compared to liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and organic light emitting diode displays, the power consumption of EPDs is extremely low [1]. There are two reasons for this low power consumption: first, the EPD is a fully reflective device which requires no backlight; secondly, the EPD has bi-stable characteristics, which means that it does not consume electric power during the image retention time [1]. Therefore, the EPD is considered the best candidate for an electronic paper (e-paper). However, the small number of grey levels and very slow response times of the EPD need to be improved. In EPDs, the number of grey levels and the response times are determined, respectively, by the duration and amplitude of the applied voltage. Thus, the driving waveform is very important for better image quality. In this Letter, we propose a driving waveform to simultaneously counter the two main problems.
