摘要

A pseudospectral method is presented for the determination of propagation characteristics in multi-layer optical waveguides. The method is based on transforming the Helmholtz eigenvalue equation from the spatial domain into the spectral domain and solving the transformed equation in the spectral domain as an unbounded interval problem employing a point matching technique. Appropriate basis functions which take into account the physical properties of the electromagnetic fields inside multi-layer optical waveguides are introduced. Representing the constitutive relation with a convolution in the spectral domain, we overcome the poor convergence problem of conventional pseudospectral methods, which is due to abrupt changes in refractive-index profiles. The presented method implicitly includes all the boundary conditions of the problem. Its application to several multi-layer optical waveguides is demonstrated to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the method. All the results are found to be in excellent agreement with those of analytical solutions.
