摘要

Although numerous longitudinal studies assessing developmental trends in elementary school children's achievement patterns found significant contributions of gender, IQ, and SES to developmental trends, the evidence concerning effects of migration background on school achievement is still scarce. In the present study based on the data of more than 500 elementary school children, the specific influence of migration background on reading, math, and spelling development was analyzed in more detail. In accord with previous studies, IQ, gender, and SES were found to be important predictors of achievement and its time-related changes in these domains. However, the relative impact of migration background was found to be comparably small. Possible reasons for this unexpected outcome include a rather low migration ratio in the sample as well as positive effects of systematic preschool education on the development of children with a migration background.
