摘要

Assessing the safety of heritage structures such as the Parliament Buildings of Canada became a priority with the publication of the 2005 National Building Code of Canada. The exterior walls of the West Block on Parliament Hill consist of multi-wythe unreinforced stone masonry. The exterior face of these walls is constructed from sandstone, while the interior face is from limestone. There is a rubble core between the two wythes. This type of stone masonry construction may be one of the most vulnerable in the event of an earthquake. To determine the capacity of stone masonry buildings subjected to earthquake loading, several properties must be identified. An extensive experimental programme was launched to determine the properties of stone masonry walls of the type used in the West Block of the Parliamentary Precinct. The details of the experimental programme are explained with focus on the calculation of the elastic and shear moduli for the walls. The wide range of information that can be obtained from such an extensive testing programme is highlighted.
