摘要

The installation of new pipelines incorporates standard flushing and a disinfection procedure before the water is declared potable. This article indicates that these procedures are not necessarily sufficient to achieve a drinking water quality within guidelines without additional general screening of contaminants at the end of the new pipeline.
Monitoring of a new pipeline system indicated that the N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) levels generated from rubber sealing rings would exceed many of the more stringent overseas drinking water guidelines and completely negate costly NDMA reduction treatments (e.g., ultraviolet irradiation) specifically installed for this purpose. Although the levels can be controlled temporarily by flushing, a more sustainable approach is required, such as pretreatment of the rubber components or a change in the manufacturing process.
