Antioxidant potential of seeds of 4 pea cultivars commonly consumed in Pakistan, namely Metvor, Samrina Zard, Climax Improved, and PF-400 was evaluated. The contents of total phenolics, flavonoids, and condensed tannins in seeds were in the range of 0.84-0.99, 0.09-0.17, and 0.57-0.68 mg/g, respectively. The antioxidant potential of the peas seeds was tested using DPPH (1.21-2.09 mu mol Trolox/g), FRAP (0.74-0.84 mmol Fe2+/g), and oxygen radical capacity (ORAC) (8.66-9.11 mu mol Trolox/g), and ORAC (21.2-31.1 mu mol Trolox/g) assays. The results of the present study showed pea cultivars, indigenous to Pakistan, to be a potentially valuable legume crops with high antioxidant potential.
