Amino acid sequences encoded by the 3 '-terminal genome regions of two morphological classes of shallot virus X

The population of shallot virus X comprises two morphological classes of virions differing mainly in filament diameter. We sequenced 2453 3'-terminal nucleotides of the genomic RNA of the class II, thinner virions (GenBank L76292). The corresponding regions of class I and class II RNA are 87% homologous; therewith the amino acid sequences of the coat proteins and the 15K proteins have a single difference each, whereas the 42K proteins show about 15% changes. The possible role of such changes in the formation of class II virions is discussed.
