Design and Analysis of a Kind of Mushroom-Like Left-Handed Material

摘要

In this paper, a kind of left-handed material (LHM) composed of a mushroom-like structure is described. The proposed mushroom-like structure unit not only has a seamless band combined with a right-handed and left-handed pass-band, which gives an ultra wide pass-band, but it also gives a balanced structure with a negative-zero-positive index of refraction. In this study, the CST Microwave Studio software is used to simulate the transmission and reflection parameters (S parameters) of this LHM, from which the effective permittivity epsilon and permeability mu are extracted to further prove the double negative property of the new LHM. The simulation results demonstrate the existence of the right-handed and left-handed pass-bands at different frequency ranges. It shows that the right-handed pass-band appears from 13 GHz to 15.5 GHz, and the left-handed pass-band is from 15.5 GHz to 17 GHz. Furthermore, the possibility of the left-handed pass-band is demonstrated by the simultaneous appearance of negative epsilon and negative mu. On the other hand, by conducting a scattering simulation on a prism-like periodic structure in the microwave band, the refractive angle is successfully observed which is contrary to that of the normal material, thereby the existence of the negative index of refraction is confirmed.
