The rise of environmental awareness has led to finding ways for increasing the resource returns-ratio for households and public places. The purpose of the current study is the development of an NXT intelligent recycling barrel by using the flow method of artificial intelligence discrimination for tree classification. How to utilize LEGO NXT to carry out waste sorting and specifically contributes two main purposes: increasing the recycling rate and promoting the sustainable use of resources as well as reducing the manpower recycling cost and promoting automation of recycling operations in the future are first studied. The system was implemented by the LEGO NXT intelligent brick with a sound controller to discriminate between metal and non-metal. Meanwhile, the NXT weight identification is used to sort iron cans and aluminum ones, and the NXT shape identification is used to sort polyester bottles from paper. The classification rate of the current system has reached 77%.
