摘要

This study aimed to evaluate the water reuse potential at heavy-duty vehicles washing facilities using a full-scale treatment unit. The treatment unit was composed of a Rotating Biological Contactor and a filtration unit. To evaluate the reuse potential a mass balance was performed using the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) parameter as the control contaminant. The treatment system was operated and monitored during a period of 5 months and produced an effluent with average concentrations of color, turbidity, TDS and Biological Oxygen Demand after 5 incubation days at 20 degrees C (BOD5,20) of 45 +/- 14 mu C, 15 +/- 6.0 NTU, 244 +/- 99 mg TDS/L and 14 +/- 7.3 mg O-2/L. Complementary treatment using an ultrafiltration unit can significantly improve the aesthetic characteristics of reuse water. Based on a mass balance and considering the TDS as the control contaminant, maximum reuse potential would be 40%, to a limiting TDS of 200 mg/L. If the system does make the final rinse operation with clean water, the reuse potential could reach 70%. In addition to water resources conservation, the proposed system can save up to 6500.00 US$ per year on operational costs.
